The AGI Policy hub uses the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that were adopted by the UN in 2015 as a starting point to explore how AGI could advance and accelerate their accomplishment as well as the potential risks.
The aim of these global goals is “peace and prosperity for people and the planet” – while tackling climate change and working to preserve oceans and forests. The SDGs highlight the connections between the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable development. Sustainability is at the center of the SDGs, as the term sustainable development implies.

About
Overview
These goals are ambitious, and the reports and outcomes to date indicate a challenging path. Most, if not all, of the goals are unlikely to be met by 2030. Rising inequalities, climate change, and biodiversity loss are topics of concerns threatening progress. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to 2023 made these challenges worse, and some regions, such as Asia, have experienced significant setbacks during that time.
There are cross-cutting issues and synergies between the different goals; for example, for SDG 13 on climate action, the IPCC sees robust synergies with SDGs 3 (health), 7 (clean energy), 11 (cities and communities), 12 (responsible consumption and production) and 14 (oceans). On the other hand, critics and observers have also identified trade-offs between the goals, such as between ending hunger and promoting environmental sustainability. Furthermore, concerns have arisen over the high number of goals (compared to the eight Millennium Development Goals), leading to compounded trade-offs, a weak emphasis on environmental sustainability, and difficulties tracking qualitative indicators.
The political impact of the SDGs has been rather limited, and the SDGs have struggled to achieve transformative changes in policy and institutional structures.[6] Also, funding remains a critical issue for achieving the SDGs. Significant financial resources would be required worldwide. The role of private investment and a shift towards sustainable financing are also essential for realizing the SDGs. Examples of progress from some countries demonstrate that achieving sustainable development through concerted global action is possible. The global effort for the SDGs calls for prioritizing environmental sustainability, understanding the indivisible nature of the goals, and seeking synergies across sectors.

By: United NationsWhat kind of future do we all want? And how will we get it? It’s a big question, and the UN is convening a major event this year to try to find some answers.
On today’s show, Conor Lennon is joined by Mayra Lopes from the UN News Portuguese Unit, and Benno Schwinghammer, UN Correspondent for Deutsche Presse-Agentur, to discuss the UN’s role in building a fairer future for people and the planet, and the progre
Summaries of 17 Global Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Read more on https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelop… 17 Goals to Transform Our World The Sustainable Development Goals are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet.
They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection. More important than ever, the goals provide a critical framework for COVID-19 recovery. Links below go to the AGI Policy post about the specific Sustainable Development Goal or SDG.

- Job Displacement:AI-driven automation could lead to job losses in certain sectors, requiring proactive measures for retraining and reskilling.
- Exacerbating Bias and Discrimination:AI algorithms can perpetuate existing biases if trained on biased data, leading to unfair or discriminatory outcomes.
- Lack of Global Governance:The rapid development of AI raises concerns about the need for effective global governance to ensure responsible and ethical AI development and deployment.
- Misinformation and Manipulation:AI can be used to spread misinformation and manipulate public opinion, posing a threat to democratic processes and social cohesion.
- Ethical Considerations:The development and deployment of AI raise complex ethical questions that need careful consideration, including issues of privacy, accountability, and transparency.
- Energy Consumption:The development and operation of AI systems can have a significant environmental impact, requiring sustainable energy solutions.
- AI Divide:Unequal access to AI technology and skills could exacerbate existing inequalities between countries and regions.
Mitigating Risks and Maximizing Benefits:- Focus on Ethical AI Development:Develop and deploy AI systems responsibly, with a focus on fairness, transparency, and accountability.
- Promote AI Literacy and Skills Development:Invest in education and training programs to equip people with the skills they need to thrive in an AI-driven economy.
